Concept of “Shitpost” and Its Connection to Nonsense Humor in the Digital Age

Shitposting is a form of online communication that may appear absurd, low-effort, or meaningless on the surface. However, its power and meaning often emerge through the audience’s interpretation. At its core, a shitpost tends to mock, satirize, or critique aspects of society in a way that breaks conventional forms—confusing, ironic, and often lacking any straightforward explanation.

Shitposts often rely on repetition—using recycled images, captions, or ideas (similar to memes). The focus is not on coherence but on unpredictability and dissonance. Serious or sensitive topics such as violence, existential dread, or racial identity may be presented through a lens of absurd humor, making the content seem "funny when it shouldn't be." This gives rise to a form of ironic or nihilistic humor, where nonsense becomes the point.

This form of expression also draws parallels with avant-garde or experimental art, where traditional structures are disrupted to challenge the viewer’s expectations. What looks meaningless at first may carry a deeper implication, depending on how it's interpreted. For example, an image of an oversized animal or a random, nonsensical caption might provoke laughter—not because it makes sense, but because it doesn’t.

Shitposting also intersects with interactive media, such as video games. Some choices in games can lead to absurd or unexpected outcomes—like taking a pill and ending up back home instead of in a fantasy world. These absurd mechanics reflect the same ethos as shitposts: embracing irrationality to critique rational systems.

Ultimately, while shitposts may look like “digital garbage” or lowbrow humor, they often hold the power to question social norms and highlight contradictions within society. Through layers of absurdity and irony, they push audiences to find meaning—or the lack thereof—in chaos.
